Calling this page About "US" is a misnomer because CompuQuilt was founded and run by one person, me, not a slew of people behind the scenes as many companies have. Here is a little history about how CompuQuilt came to be.
I've been sewing off and on since the 8th grade, however, I didn't learn about quilting until a trip to the doctor's office, in 1990, where I found a Quilter's Newsletter magazine laying on one of the tables. As I perused the magazine, I became so enthralled with the quilts that I had to try it.
As I looked through the magazine for ideas I decided to make a quilt for my little girl. I manually enlarged a pattern of bunny rabbits that were on the curtains I'd made for her room and appliqued it to background fabric using my sewing machine. Then pulled out my graph paper and drew some geometric designs to border the appliqued rabbit. It was made with scraps of fabric found at the thrift store because as a Navy family we didn't have much money. I'm sure it had some polyester in it because...well, I didn't know better. Having sewn for a while, the quilt had 1/2" seam allowances. It wasn't until later that I learned a 1/4 inch would be better. Boy did I have a lot to learn. Here is picture of the quilt. The second picture shows the curtain fabric where I took the applique design from.
Before making my first quilt, I'd gone to college as an accounting major. One of the required classes was programming in DOS; remember that dinosaur? Well, that dinosaur turned out to be my favorite class and had I not been so close to graduating, I would have changed my major to computer programming. With a love of quilting and computers, it wasn't long before I could merge the two.
I ventured into computerized quilting by chance when I joined the AOL quilting forum in 1995 before the internet really took off. That's where I learned that there were computerized quilting programs and once again I was enthralled. From there it was just a matter of time before I started my own computer oriented quilting website.
Our timeline: CompuQuilt began as a home based business in 1997 while in Fairfield California and have been online continuously since then. The original version of Virtual Quilt Labels was released in 2001. In 2010, the company moved to Albuquerque, NM where it currently resides.
One of the aspects of CompuQuilt that I really enjoy is our Quilter's Gallery. Over the years I have invited a variety of quilters to be Featured Artists in the gallery and there are now 47 quilters showing their lovely quilts in the gallery. be sure to visit the gallery while you are here.
Our future plans include a new version of Virtual Quilt Labels Plus and adding more computer oriented quilting programs and accessories to our product line. Stay tuned.
